Privacy
Privacy and data
A plain English summary of what we collect and why.
What we collect
- Report details: location, photo, description and the options you choose. These are published on the map.
- Contact details (optional): your name and email, used only to send updates about your report. Never published.
- Technical data: a one-way encrypted fingerprint of your IP address, used to prevent spam and abuse. We do not store your IP address itself.
Photos
When you upload a photo we re-save it, which removes hidden metadata such as GPS coordinates, camera model and timestamps. Photos that show faces or readable number plates may be held back from publication.
AI checks
If enabled, photos may be sent to Google's Gemini service to check that they show a road defect and to suggest a severity. Contact details are never sent.
Sharing with highway authorities
When a report is referred, we share the report details and photo with the relevant highway authority. We only share your contact details if you have asked us to.
Third-party services
Maps are provided by OpenStreetMap tile servers. Location lookups use postcodes.io and OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts.
Your rights
You can ask us to remove your contact details or a report you made at any time by emailing hello@potholetracker.org. Please include your reference number.
Cookies
We use one essential session cookie to keep forms secure and remember reports you made on this device. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
